Okay, so I gotta talk about this whole Chase Burns situation. It’s been bugging me, and I need to get it off my chest. You know, why did he leave Tennessee for Wake Forest? I spent a whole afternoon digging into this, and here’s what I found.
First off, I started by looking at some of the stuff people were saying online. Burns was a total beast at Tennessee, right? Helped get them to the College World Series in 2023 and had this insane strikeout rate. I mean, the guy was good. But then, bam, he’s in the transfer portal.
I dug deeper, reading some interviews with Tennessee’s coach, Tony Vitello. Turns out, Vitello wasn’t even shocked. He said Burns told him he felt like he hit his peak at Tennessee and needed a change. “It’s a different time now,” Vitello mentioned, which, you know, makes sense with all this transfer stuff happening in college sports.

He announced he was heading to Wake Forest. He said something about playing one season for the Demon Deacons. So, my next step was to understand what Wake Forest had to offer that Tennessee didn’t. What a rabbit hole that was!
I spent a good hour comparing the two programs. One thing I noticed is that Wake Forest has been killing it lately, too. They’ve got a solid program, a great coaching staff, and they’re always in the mix for national titles. Maybe Burns saw an opportunity to grow even more there? That’s what I was thinking, at least.
The Draft
Then, this happened: The Reds drafted Burns! And get this – they signed him for a record $9.25 million! Whoa. They sent him to Arizona to train and build up his arm since he hadn’t pitched in a while.
So, after all this digging, here’s my take: Burns probably felt like he needed a new challenge. He achieved a lot at Tennessee but maybe felt like he wasn’t progressing anymore. Wake Forest offered him a chance to compete at a high level in a different environment. And with the draft happening, it looks like the move paid off big time for him. Good for him, honestly. It takes guts to make a move like that, and it seems like it was the right decision for his career.
