Remembering Brandon Roy – More Than Just Hoops
So, Brandon Roy. Yeah, that name takes me back. I wasn’t following college ball super close back then, but when he landed in Portland, man, you heard the buzz. I caught some early games, maybe on a grainy stream or something back in the day. Right away, you could see this guy was different. Smooth. Ice cold in the clutch. Not flashy like some guys, just… effective. Deadly effective.

I really got hooked during those Blazers years. We weren’t exactly title contenders right off the bat, but with him, Aldridge, Oden (another tough story, right?), you felt like something special was building. Seriously, Roy was the heart of it. That comeback against Dallas? The one where he just went nuts in the fourth quarter? I remember watching that, jumping off my couch. It felt like anything was possible when he had the ball.
I even started collecting some of his stuff. Not crazy expensive things, just a jersey, a few cards. It felt like you were investing in a sure thing, you know? This guy was gonna be an all-timer. MVP talk wasn’t crazy talk back then.
- He had that killer instinct.
- The midrange game was pure art.
- He just seemed like a solid dude, too. No drama.
Then the Knees Started Going…
Man, the injury news. That was rough. First, it was whispers, then more serious reports. No cartilage. Just bone on bone. Every time he drove to the basket, you’d kinda hold your breath. It wasn’t sudden like some horrific snap you see on TV. It was this slow, grinding decline. That almost felt worse, watching this incredible talent just get eroded away.
It hit me kinda personally, oddly enough. Around that time, I was dealing with my own stuff – not a busted knee, but, you know, setbacks. Job stuff, life stuff. Seeing Roy fight through the pain, playing limited minutes, still trying… it was inspiring but also just sad. You see someone at the absolute peak, and then boom, something beyond their control just takes it away. Makes you think about how fragile things are, career, health, everything.
It wasn’t fair. Simple as that. He tried coming back, went to Minnesota. I watched those games too, hoping for a miracle. But you could tell. The explosiveness wasn’t there. The confidence, maybe? It just wasn’t the same Brandon Roy.

When he finally hung it up for good, it wasn’t a shock, but still a bummer. All that potential. We got robbed, Blazers fans got robbed, basketball fans got robbed. But mostly, he got robbed. What could have been, right? It’s one of those big “what ifs” in sports.
So yeah, Brandon Roy. For me, it’s not just about the highlights. It’s about that whole ride – the crazy highs, the tough lows, and the reminder that sometimes, talent and hard work aren’t enough when luck turns against you. Still got that jersey somewhere though.
