Alright, let’s talk about them golfers, the ones they say are good but ain’t never won the big ones. You know, the majors. Folks get all worked up about these majors, like they’re the only thing that matters. But I say, a win’s a win, right? Still, gotta talk about these fellas.
First off, they talk about this Light Horse Harry Cooper fella. Heard he won a whole bunch, like 31 times on the PGA Tour, but never got a major. That’s a long time ago, though, way before my time. Then there’s Macdonald Smith, 25 wins and not a single major. Imagine that! All them wins, but no big one. These young folks probably never even heard of ’em.
Now, coming to the more recent guys, there’s Doug Sanders. Twenty wins, but zero majors. That’s gotta sting a bit, you know? All that talent, and you can’t quite get over that hump.
- Matt Kuchar: Now, this Kuchar fella, he’s been close a few times. Folks say he got a third place at the Masters back in 2012. He gets in the top-10 pretty often, which is something, I guess. He’s still playing, so maybe he’ll snag one before he hangs up his clubs. But time’s a-tickin’, ain’t it?
- Patrick Cantlay: Then there’s this Cantlay boy. Folks say he’s never even come close to winning a major. Not even a sniff, they say. Well, that’s just how it goes sometimes. Maybe it ain’t in the cards for him. Can’t win ’em all, I always say.
And then, there’s this young fella, Viktor Hovland. He’s real good, they say, the best player without a major right now. He almost got one at the PGA Championship last year, tied for second. Two strokes short, they said. Just two strokes! That’s gotta hurt. He’s still young, though, plenty of time left. But you never know in this game, you never know.
You see, winning a major, it ain’t easy. It takes more than just talent, I reckon. You gotta have luck, you gotta have grit, and you gotta have that somethin’ special. These fellas, they got the talent, no doubt about that. But maybe they just ain’t got that little bit of extra somethin’ they need to win the big one. Or maybe they just unlucky, who knows? Golf’s a funny game that way.
It’s like my prize-winning tomatoes. I tend to them every day, give them the best soil, the best water, the best everything. And sometimes, they still don’t grow as big and juicy as I want ’em to. Same with golf, I guess. You can do everything right, and still come up short. That’s life, ain’t it?
So, yeah, these golfers, they ain’t won a major. But they still won a whole bunch of other tournaments. And that counts for somethin’, don’t it? They’re still good golfers, real good golfers, even if they ain’t got that major trophy on their shelf. They make a good living, I bet, and that ain’t nothin’ to sneeze at.
I say, good for them. They’re out there playing the game they love, and that’s what matters. Winning ain’t everything, you know. Sometimes, just being out there, doing your best, that’s enough. And who knows, maybe one of these days, one of ’em will finally get that major win. Stranger things have happened, that’s for sure. But even if they don’t, they still got a lot to be proud of.
So next time you hear someone talkin’ ‘bout the best golfers who ain’t won a major, don’t you go lookin’ down on ‘em. They’re still good players, puttin’ in the work, just like the rest of ‘em. And that’s something worth respectin’, I reckon.
