Alright, alright, let me tell ya ’bout this tennis match, the one with them fellas, Tommy Paul and… what’s his name? Hubert… Hur… somethin’ or other. Yeah, him. Tommy Paul versus Hubert Hurkacz, that’s the ticket.
So, I heard tell this match was a real barn burner. Tommy, that fella, he broke the other guy’s serve, what, seven times? Seven times! That’s a lot, ain’t it? Like tryin’ to catch a greased pig at the county fair, that other fella just couldn’t hold onto his serve. But hold on, it wasn’t no walk in the park for Tommy neither.
That Hubert fella, he wasn’t no slouch. He put up a good fight, he did. He even broke Tommy’s serve a few times, and Tommy had to work his tail off to save some break points. I heard tell in that last game, Tommy saved like six break points! Six! That’s like holdin’ off a whole pack of dogs tryin’ to get at your supper. He musta been sweatin’ bullets, that Tommy.
The score, now let me see if I got this right… It was somethin’ like 7-5, then 3-6, then 6-3. So, Tommy won the first set, then that Hubert fella, he came back and won the second. Got Tommy all riled up, I bet. But then Tommy, he buckled down and took the third set, and the match. See, that’s what I call grit! Just like when you’re tryin’ to get that last bit of jam outta the jar, you gotta work for it!
- First set: Tommy won, 7-5.
- Second set: Hubert won, 3-6.
- Third set: Tommy won, 6-3.
This match, it was part of some big tennis thing, I think they called it the… Interna… somethin’ BNL d’Italia. Sounds fancy, don’t it? Happened in May, this year. Quarter-finals, they said. That means there was only eight fellas left, right? Tommy, he was one of ’em.
Now, I don’t know much about this tennis stuff, but I know a good fight when I see one. And this sounded like a real humdinger. Back and forth, nobody givin’ an inch. Reminds me of them rooster fights down at the Johnson place, only with racquets instead of spurs.
They say these fellas, they got this thing called “head to head” records. Means how they done against each other before. I guess folks like to keep track of that kinda thing. Like who’s won more, who’s lost more. Me, I just care about who wins on the day, but these fellas, they got all sorts of numbers and stats. It’s enough to make your head spin like a whirligig.
Anyways, Tommy, he came out on top this time. Beat that Hubert fella fair and square. Musta been a sight to see, all that runnin’ and hittin’. I bet them balls was flyin’ faster than a scalded cat! And the crowd, I bet they was goin’ wild. Cheerin’ and hollerin’ like it was the last day of school.
So, Tommy Paul beat Hubert Hurkacz. That’s the long and short of it. And it sounds like it was a heck of a match. I tell ya, sometimes I wish I could see these things myself, but my old bones ain’t up for much travelin’ these days. But I can still hear about it, and that’s good enough for me. Keeps me in the loop, you know? Even an old woman like me likes a bit of excitement now and again.
