Okay, so I got this idea the other day. I’m pretty into golf, maybe a bit too much according to some folks, and I’ve definitely got my favorite clothing brands for hitting the links. It struck me – why not make a crossword puzzle focused just on golf apparel brands? Seemed like a fun little project to keep the brain busy, you know?

Getting Started: The Brand Hunt
First things first, I needed a list of brands. This was actually the fun part. I started just by thinking off the top of my head:
- The big ones everyone knows.
- Some of the gear I actually wear.
- Brands I see pros wearing on TV.
So, I grabbed a notepad and started jotting them down. Went through my closet too, checking labels. Then, I did a quick search online, just to see if I missed any obvious ones or maybe find a few slightly less common names to make it a bit challenging. Ended up with a pretty solid list, maybe around 20-25 brands.
Making the Puzzle Grid
Now, the tricky bit: actually building the crossword grid. I decided to go old school first, sketching it out on graph paper. Man, this was harder than I thought! Trying to get all those names to intersect nicely? It’s like a weird game of Tetris with letters. Some brand names are super long, others are short. You try fitting ‘Peter Millar’ next to ‘FootJoy’ and making it work with ‘Adidas’ running through them – yeah, takes some fiddling.
I spent a good hour erasing and redrawing squares. Some brands just wouldn’t fit, no matter how I twisted and turned the grid. Had to cut a few from my initial list, which was a bummer, but hey, that’s puzzle making for you. Eventually, I got a layout that looked okay, with a decent number of interlocking words. I then used a simple online crossword maker tool just to tidy it up and make it look cleaner than my scribbles.
Writing the Clues
With the grid sorted, I needed clues for each brand. I didn’t want them to be too easy, like “Three stripes brand (6 letters)”. Where’s the fun in that? I tried to mix it up:

- Mentioning a famous player associated with the brand.
- Hinting at their logo (like the umbrella or the gator).
- Using a bit of their history or where they started.
- Sometimes just a slightly cryptic description of their style.
Trying to be clever but not impossible was the goal. I wrote down a couple of options for each, then picked the one I thought worked best. Read them aloud to see how they sounded.
The Final Test Run
Once I had the grid and the clues all typed up nicely, I printed it out. Had to test it myself, right? Made a cup of coffee and sat down like I was solving someone else’s puzzle. Found a typo almost immediately – classic! Fixed that. Solved the whole thing. It felt pretty good, not too hard, not too simple. It actually worked!
So yeah, that’s how I ended up spending an afternoon making a golf apparel brand crossword. It’s nothing fancy, just a bit of fun combining a couple of things I enjoy. Kept me occupied, and now I’ve got this little puzzle to stump my golf buddies with next time we’re hanging out.
