Okay, so today I was trying to solve the LA Times crossword puzzle, and I got totally stuck on one clue: “shuriken.” I’ve seen enough ninja movies to know what a shuriken is – you know, those star-shaped throwing things – but I just couldn’t figure out what word they were looking for.

First, I racked my brain trying to think of synonyms. “Throwing star”? Nope, too many letters. “Ninja weapon”? Still too long. I even tried thinking of specific types of shuriken, but nothing was clicking.
Then, I started looking at the crossing words. I had a few letters filled in, but they weren’t much help. It was something like “_ T _ R,” which could be a million things!
Feeling defeated, I decided to cheat a little (don’t tell anyone!). I googled “shuriken crossword clue la times,”. I mean it’s for my record, so just a little bit.
The first few results gave me some general crossword puzzle help sites, but I scrolled down until I found a forum dedicated to crossword solvers. Bingo!
Someone on the forum had posted the same clue, and another user had replied with the answer: “STAR.”

Of course! It was so simple. “STAR” fits perfectly, and it totally makes sense – shurikens are star-shaped. I slapped my forehead and filled in the answer on my puzzle.
So, there you have it. Even though I had to peek at the answer online, I still learned something. And I finally finished that darn crossword puzzle!
