Alright, so this question popped into my head the other day, completely out of the blue: did Steve Harvey box? Seemed kinda random, but once it was there, I had to figure it out.

First thing I did, obviously, was just punch it into the search bar. You know, the usual stuff: “Steve Harvey boxing,” “Steve Harvey boxer,” “Steve Harvey sports history.” Got a bunch of stuff back, mostly about his comedy, his TV shows, Family Feud, Miss Universe… you name it, but nothing solid about him actually being in a ring, throwing punches.
So I thought, maybe it was way back? Like before he got famous? I started digging into his early life stories. Found out about him growing up in West Virginia, going to Kent State, working on the Ford assembly line in Cleveland, doing stand-up comedy in the 80s, even being homeless for a bit, living in his car. Pretty interesting stuff, gotta say. Shows you where grit can get you. But boxing? Not a single mention anywhere I looked.
It got me thinking, though. Why did I even think of boxing? Maybe it’s just ’cause he looks like a tough dude? Or maybe it was something I overheard ages ago and misremembered? Reminds me of this time I was convinced my old neighbor, Mr. Henderson, used to be a professional bowler. Swore I saw trophies in his garage once. Spent weeks telling people that. Then I finally asked his wife, and she laughed. Said he collected vintage beer steins, not bowling trophies. Close, but no cigar. It’s funny how your brain just makes stuff up sometimes and holds onto it.
Digging Deeper (or just getting sidetracked)
Anyway, back to Harvey. I tried different angles. Looked for old interviews, read some biography summaries. Found plenty about his fraternity days, Omega Psi Phi, sure. They step, they stroll, but boxing? Nope. Found lists of famous people who did box. Plenty of actors and musicians tried it, but Steve Harvey’s name wasn’t on any list I could find.
There was this one forum thread somewhere, deep in the search results, where someone asked the same question. A couple of replies were like “Yeah, I think I heard that somewhere?” but nobody had proof. Classic internet non-answers. Someone else suggested maybe they were confusing him with someone else. Could be. There’s probably more than one Steve Harvey out there, right?

- Searched his official bio – nothing.
- Checked sports reference sites – nothing.
- Looked through interview archives – nothing.
- Scoured forums and Q&A sites – just speculation.
So, after poking around for a while, going down a few rabbit holes about his early jobs and his comedy tours, I basically came up empty on the boxing front. All signs point to no. He did a lot of things before hitting it big, but stepping into a boxing ring doesn’t seem to be one of them.
It’s kinda funny, the things you end up researching. Started with a simple question, ended up reading about Ford Pinto assembly lines and Kent State history. Oh well. Guess that’s that mystery solved. Or, well, unsolved in the way I thought it might be. Steve Harvey, the comedian, the host, the author… but not the boxer. Onto the next random thought, I suppose.
