Well, folks, if ya ain’t heard about the Southern Boone baseball team, let me tell ya, it’s a mighty fine story. Them boys sure do know how to play ball! From them early spring games to the big championship wins, they’ve been puttin’ on a show for all of Ashland and beyond. Now, ya might be wonderin’ how a team from a little ol’ town like ours done managed to make such a name for themselves, so let me tell ya a bit about it.
It all started with some tough games early in the season. Southern Boone’s baseball team had to work hard to get their rhythm, just like a good ol’ plowman gettin’ his fields ready for planting. In them first few matches, the team was up and down, losin’ a couple here and there, but they ain’t never gave up. Now, ya take them boys, they ain’t the kind to quit when the going gets rough. They kept fightin’, and that’s what it took to get ‘em where they are today.
One of the most excitin’ things was when they beat Logan-Rogersville 8-3 in the final game of the season to claim their first state title. Now that right there was somethin’ special. Head coach Brian Ash, he done made history that day as the first coach to lead the Southern Boone Eagles to a state championship. It was a big ol’ celebration in Ashland that day, lemme tell ya. You’d think it was a big ol’ family reunion with the way folks were hollerin’ and cheerin’!
Now, don’t get me wrong, it ain’t always been easy for them boys. They had some tough times, like when they played Father Tolton Trailblazers in the Class 4 District 8 Championship. The Blazers come out strong, takin’ a six-run lead right from the start, but Southern Boone wasn’t ready to throw in the towel. They fought back hard, playin’ like they knew it was their time to shine. And sure enough, after a bit of fightin’, they pulled out a win and moved on. That’s what I call determination!
One thing that stands out is the leadership of Coach Brian Ash. He don’t just teach them boys how to hit and pitch; he teaches ‘em how to keep their heads up, even when the game ain’t goin’ their way. This man, Coach Ash, he done reached 400 career wins! Ain’t that somethin’? You don’t get that kind of record by just sittin’ back and watchin’. You gotta work hard, day in and day out, and that’s exactly what he’s done for these boys. It’s no wonder they’ve gone on to make history!
Now, let’s talk a bit about the spring season, that’s when things really start to heat up for the boys of Southern Boone. They had a schedule all lined up, playin’ teams from all over, and each game was more excitin’ than the last. One of their big games was back on March 22nd against Palmyra, and folks were talkin’ about it for days! With the varsity boys playin’ in the 11:00 AM slot, it was a big ol’ show that everyone turned out for. Southern Boone showed up strong, just like they always do, and kept that momentum goin’ through the season.
There’s somethin’ magical about the way they play. It’s like they know what it means to be part of somethin’ bigger than themselves. The team works together, like a good ol’ well-oiled machine. And you can see it in how they move on the field, how they cheer each other on, and how they never give up, no matter what. When the game’s on the line, Southern Boone baseball knows how to finish strong.
And don’t think it’s just the games that get people excited. The whole town of Ashland is behind them boys, supportin’ them in every way. From the folks at the local diner to the kids at the school, everyone’s out there rootin’ for Southern Boone. It’s like one big family, and that’s what makes this story even better. It ain’t just about the wins and losses; it’s about the community comin’ together to support the team, the boys, and the game they love.
So, folks, if you ain’t been keepin’ up with the Southern Boone Eagles, you best get yourself to one of their games. The way them boys play ball, you won’t wanna miss a minute of it. Who knows? You might just get to see history in the makin’, just like we all did when they took home that first state title. Go Eagles!
