Okay, so, I’ve been digging into this whole SMU football head coach situation, and let me tell you, it’s been quite the ride. I figured I’d share my findings, just in case anyone else is as curious as I was.
I started off pretty clueless, just knowing that SMU is a university with a football team, located in Dallas. The first thing I did was a simple search. Then I found out that a guy named Rhett Lashlee is the current head coach. Apparently, this is his third season, and he’s been doing pretty well – got a 29-12 record. I mean, the second-most wins for a head coach in his first three years in program history, that’s saying something, right?
So, I dug a little deeper into Lashlee. Turns out, back in 2018, he was hired as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for SMU. That makes sense – you gotta work your way up the ladder, you know?
Then I stumbled upon another name: Sonny Dykes. Now, this guy used to be the head coach at SMU. And he was introduced as TCU’s head football coach on Nov. 30, 2021. Also, he won 10 National Coach of the Year awards in 2022. It seems like SMU has a history of picking some solid coaches.
Next, I looked into the team’s history a bit. They’ve been ranked in the CFP Rankings a couple of times and even had a Heisman winner, Doak Walker, way back in 1948. Their stadium is called Gerald J. Ford Stadium, with a capacity of 32,000. That must be a pretty cool place to catch a game.
I also came across a guy named Chad Morris. He was the head coach before Lashlee and used to be Clemson’s Offensive Coordinator for 4 seasons. He tried to re-energize the Mustang offense. Native Texan, I thought that was a nice touch.
Lastly, I found out about Megan Ferraguti, who joined the SMU football staff in 2022. She started as Director of External Relations for Football and then became Senior Director of Head Coach Operations in 2023. So, there’s some interesting stuff happening behind the scenes, too.
Whew, that was a lot of info! It’s pretty interesting to see how all these pieces fit together.
