Okay, so I saw this “secures as a rope” thing in the NYT, and I was like, “What the heck is that?” I’m always up for trying something new, especially if it sounds kinda weird and outdoorsy.

First, I googled it. I mean, obviously. Turns out, it wasn’t some crazy new sport, but more about using ropes for, well, securing stuff. I’m not gonna lie,I feel a little bit disappointed.
Then, I decided to go with it, I thought to myself, “Okay, let’s see what I can do with some rope.”
I grabbed some rope I had lying around – I think it was from that one time I tried to build a treehouse and totally failed. Don’t ask.
My first “project” was trying to tie down some stuff in my backyard. We get some pretty strong winds here, and my patio furniture is always threatening to take flight. So, I figured, “Perfect! Let’s use some rope!”
- I wrapped the rope around the legs of my patio table.
- Then I tied it,not sure what knot it calls, to a heavy planter. I think I did some kind of knot my dad showed me once? It looked secure-ish.
- I also used some rope to secure a tarp over my grill. That was a bit trickier because the tarp kept flapping around. I ended up using, like, a million knots.
After that,I am pretty pround of myself. I felt pretty accomplished, even though it wasn’t exactly scaling a mountain or anything. It’s the small victories, right?

My takeaway?
Rope is useful! I mean, duh. But it’s also kind of satisfying to just, you know, tie stuff down. It makes you feel like you’ve got things under control, even if your patio furniture is the only thing you’re “securing.”
I probably won’t become a rope expert or anything, but hey, at least my patio furniture won’t blow away, that’s a great deal, I would say.
