Today I wanted to dig into the history of the New Orleans Saints, specifically their quarterbacks. I’ve always been curious about the guys who led the team before Drew Brees, you know?
I started by searching for information about the Saints’ early days. I found out that the first-ever Saints quarterback was a guy named Gary Cuozzo. He was one of three quarterbacks who played for them in the 1960s. It’s crazy to think about how much the team has changed since then.
Then, I moved on to more recent history. Of course, Drew Brees came up right away. I mean, the guy is a legend. I found out he played for the Saints from 2006 to 2020, and he’s 45 years old now. No surprises there, he’s widely considered the best Saints quarterback of all time.
- Bobby Hebert: This guy played for the Saints after a stint in the USFL. He was apparently a local legend and took over the starting quarterback position late in the season one year.
- Archie Manning: He’s a Hall of Famer and played for the Saints in the 1980s. He must have been pretty good to get that kind of recognition.
- Wade Wilson: He joined the Saints in 1992 after falling out of favor with the Minnesota Vikings. I guess he found a new home in New Orleans.
Here are a few other names that popped up:
It’s interesting to see how the quarterback position has evolved for the Saints over the years. I spent a good chunk of time reading articles and forum posts about these players. It seems like even before Brees, the Saints had some decent quarterbacks who led them to the postseason a few times.
Finally, I compiled a list of what many consider the top five Saints quarterbacks in history. Brees is at the top, obviously, but it was fun to learn about the other guys who made the cut.
Overall, it was a fun little research project. I enjoyed learning more about the history of the Saints and the quarterbacks who have led the team. It makes me appreciate the current team even more, knowing the legacy they’re building on.
