Okay, so I’ve been seeing this boxer, Ryan Garcia, all over my feed, and his hand tattoo kept catching my eye. I was like, “I gotta try drawing that.” So, that’s exactly what I did today. Here’s how it went down:
Getting Started
First, I pulled up a bunch of pictures of Ryan Garcia. I needed good, clear shots of his hand tattoo so I could really see all the details. It’s mostly on the back of his left hand, so I made sure to grab a few different angles.
The Sketching Process
I started with a basic outline of a hand. I’m no artist, so it looked more like a mitten at first. I kept erasing and redrawing, trying to get the proportions right. It took a few tries, but eventually, it started to resemble a hand. I lightly sketched in where the fingers would be.
- Focus on Shapes: Next, I started blocking in the major shapes of the tattoo. I noticed it’s got a crown, some wings, and some text.
- Layering Details: I drew the crown first, then added the wings spreading out from it. The wings were tricky – lots of little feathers. I just took it one feather at a time.
- Text Time: The text seemed to be the word “VICTORY”. I lightly sketched that in below the crown, making sure it fit the curve of the hand.
Adding the Details In
This is where it got real. I started refining everything. I darkened the lines of the crown, added some shading to give it dimension. I worked on the wings, trying to make the feathers look somewhat realistic. I have to be honest, it was a bit challenging!
I made the letters more defined, they are a bit stylized and old school. I added the little details, I keep checking back to the reference photos to make sure I wasn’t missing anything.
The Final Touches
Once I was happy with the overall look, I went over everything with a darker pen to make the lines pop. I added a little bit of shading here and there to give it some depth. I erased any stray pencil marks.
It’s definitely not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! It was a fun little art project, and I learned a bit more about drawing hands and tattoos in the process. Maybe I’ll try another one of his tattoos next time!
