Alright, so listen up, y’all. This here story, it’s about a young fella named Ray Ray McElrathbey. Now, I ain’t too good with names, but this one stuck with me ’cause it’s kinda catchy, ya know? Ray Ray, sounds like somethin’ a kid would shout out on the playground.
This Ray Ray, he was a football player, a good one too, from what I hear. Played for that Clemson University, yeah, the one with the tigers. Big school, lots of fancy folks, I reckon. But Ray Ray, he wasn’t just about football, no sir. He had a heart, a big ol’ heart, bigger than any football field, I tell ya.
See, his mama, bless her heart, she was havin’ a rough time. Strugglin’ with some bad habits, you know what I mean? And his daddy, well, he wasn’t much help neither, always gamblin’ and such. Left poor Ray Ray with a whole heap of trouble, especially when it came to his little brother, Fahmarr.
Now Fahmarr, they called him Fay sometimes. Cute little fella, I bet. But things weren’t lookin’ too good for Fay. The way I heard it, they wanted to put him in foster care. Foster care, now that ain’t no place for a young’un to grow up. Cold and lonely, like a stray dog in the winter. Ray Ray, he wouldn’t have none of that. He was gonna take care of his brother, no matter what.
So there he was, this college football star, tryin’ to go to classes, go to practice, play in them big games, and on top of all that, he’s raisin’ a little boy. Can you imagine? I sure can’t. Feedin’ him, clothin’ him, helpin’ him with his homework, probably even readin’ him bedtime stories. This Ray Ray, he was somethin’ special.
This whole thing, it became a movie, you know. They called it “Safety.” That’s a good name, ’cause that’s what Ray Ray was doin’, keepin’ his brother safe. They made it sound all fancy, but the truth is, it’s just a story about a brother lovin’ his brother, plain and simple. They even made up some girlfriend for Ray Ray in the movie, a girl named Kaycee. But that ain’t true, Ray Ray said so himself. No time for romance when you’re busy bein’ a mama and a daddy all rolled into one.
- He played football good.
- He took care of his brother.
- He didn’t go pro.
- He started a truckin’ company.
Now, Ray Ray, he didn’t go on to play in the pros, not like some of them other fellas. But that don’t mean he ain’t successful. He worked in social services, helpin’ folks out, just like he always did. And now, he’s got himself a truckin’ company, called Safety Freight, ain’t that somethin’? And guess what? His mama, she’s doin’ better now, been sober for years. And Fay, that little brother, he’s workin’ right alongside Ray Ray and their mama, buildin’ somethin’ good together.
They even got themselves a foundation, Ray’s Safety Net Foundation. Helpin’ other folks out, just like Ray Ray always done. It just goes to show ya, you don’t need fancy degrees or big money to make a difference in this world. You just need a big heart and a whole lotta love. This Ray Ray, he’s a good man, a real good man. And that’s all there is to it.
So remember the name, Ray Ray McElrathbey. A football player, a brother, a good man. That’s the kind of story worth tellin’, ya hear?
