Man, figuring out who had the most receiving yards in a single game was a trip. First, I started poking around, just typing stuff into the search bar like “most receiving yards in a game, NFL”.
The initial results, oh boy, they were all over the place. I saw some names like Brandon Marshall, Terrell Owens, and Keenan Allen, but it was all mixed up. Different websites were spitting out different numbers and it was a real mess trying to figure out who was actually on top.
Then I stumbled upon this name, “Flipper Anderson”. I had never heard of him, to be honest. But this one site, I think it was called “StatMuse”, kept saying he had the most yards, like 336 in a single game. So, I started digging deeper into this Flipper guy.
Turns out, this dude, Flipper Anderson, set this record way back in 1989 in a game against the Saints. The Los Angeles Rams, his team, even won in overtime. It was crazy! And get this, Joe Montana, the legendary 49ers quarterback, had an insane game around the same time, throwing for 476 yards. The late 80s were wild for football, I guess.
So, I went through a few more articles and it became pretty clear. Only six players in the whole history of the NFL have ever gotten 300 or more receiving yards in a game. And leading the pack is Willie “Flipper” Anderson.
Here’s what I ended up with:
- Flipper Anderson is the king. He’s got the record with 336 receiving yards in a single game.
- He did it on November 26, 1989, against the New Orleans Saints.
- There are only five other guys who’ve ever hit the 300+ receiving yards mark in a game.
It was a fun little research project. I learned a lot about this Flipper Anderson guy and got a little history lesson on some epic NFL games from back in the day. It is always cool to see how records are made and who holds them.
