Alright, listen up, y’all. We gonna talk about somethin’ today, somethin’ about them basketball fellas, the ones always runnin’ and jumpin’ on TV. They call it the “NBA,” whatever that means. Anyway, these fellas, they shoot a lot, ya know? Like, a whole heck of a lot. And guess what? They miss a whole heck of a lot too! It ain’t all swishes and cheers, let me tell ya.
Now, I heard tell there’s this one fella, LeBron James they call him. Big fella, strong as an ox, I reckon. He’s real good, they say, one of the best ever. But even this fella, this LeBron, he misses shots. A lot of ’em! Can you believe it? They say he missed more shots than anyone else in the whole history of this NBA thing. Fourteen thousand somethin’ misses! Fourteen thousand! That’s more than the chickens I got out back, and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
It got me thinkin’, you know? All that missin’. Makes you wonder how they keep goin’. I mean, if I missed that many times tryin’ to put a worm on a hook, I’d just give up fishin’ altogether. But these fellas, they just keep shootin’. Maybe that’s the secret, huh? Just keep on keepin’ on, even when you mess up real bad.
- Missin’ shots ain’t the end of the world, I guess.
- Even the best ones mess up sometimes.
- You gotta keep tryin’ if you wanna get good at somethin’.
Then there’s this other fella, Elvin Hayes. They say he missed a whole bunch too. Thirteen thousand somethin’ misses. Not as many as that LeBron fella, but still a whole heap. I ain’t never seen him play, but they say he was good too. Guess it just goes to show ya, even the good ones can’t make every shot. It’s like tryin’ to bake a cake without burnin’ it. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it don’t. That’s just life, I reckon.
And what about this Kareem Abdul-Jabbar fella? They talk about him like he’s some kind of king or somethin’. “The Reign Supreme,” they call him. Sounds fancy, don’t it? Well, I bet he missed a few shots in his day too. Nobody’s perfect, not even kings and queens, or whatever this Kareem fella was supposed to be. It’s like tryin’ to grow tomatoes in the desert. You might get a few, but you ain’t gonna get a whole garden full.
So, what’s the point of all this talk about missin’ shots? Well, I guess it’s just this: don’t be afraid to miss. Don’t be afraid to mess up. It’s part of learnin’, part of gettin’ better. Them basketball fellas, they miss thousands of shots, but they keep shootin’. And that’s why they’re so good, I reckon. They ain’t scared of failin’. They just keep tryin’ until they get it right. It’s like my grandson trying to learn to ride a bike. He fell down many many times, scraped his knees more times than I can count, but he kept on trying and now he is riding like wind.
It ain’t about how many times you fall down, it’s about how many times you get back up. That’s what my old pappy used to say, and he was a wise old fella. And that’s true for basketball, for fishin’, for bakin’ cakes, and for pretty much everything else in life. So, next time you see them fellas on TV missin’ shots, don’t you go laughin’ at ’em. Just remember, they’re still tryin’. And that’s what matters.
So next time you are doing somethin’ and you missed, don’t be discouraged, just keep at it. And remember, even those high and mighty NBA fellas miss a whole lot. They just keep chuckin’ that ball, and eventually, it goes in. And that’s all there is to it.
And if someone tell you that you missed too many times, just tell them old woman said so, even the best player missed thousands of shots. It’s all part of the game, this game of basketball and this game we call life.
