Okay, so today I decided to tackle this “substance crossword” thing. I’d heard about it and figured, why not give it a shot? It sounded like a fun little brain teaser.

First, I googled “substance crossword” to get a better idea of what I was dealing with. I saw a bunch of websites offering crossword puzzles, but many felt, you know, a bit generic. I wanted something with a bit more… substance, I guess. No pun intended!
I spent a good chunk of time browsing through different sites. Some were too easy, others were ridiculously hard. I was starting to feel like Goldilocks – this one’s too hot, this one’s too cold!
My Process
- Started with the shorter words. Seemed logical, right? Get the easy ones out of the way.
- Used the intersecting letters as clues. If I had a word with three letters and the middle one was ‘A’, that narrowed things down considerably.
- Got stuck. A lot. I’m not gonna lie, there were moments where I stared at the grid, completely blank.
- Took breaks. Seriously, stepping away for a few minutes and coming back with fresh eyes helped more than I thought it would.
- Used a pen and paper. Actually I wrote the hints down so that my brain started to recongnize those words.
- Cheated. Okay, okay, I admit it! There were a couple of words I just couldn’t get, so I looked them up. Don’t judge me!
Eventually, after much trial and error, I managed to fill in most of the grid. It wasn’t perfect, and I definitely used some “creative” solutions (read: I probably bent the rules a little), but I got there in the end.
It was a surprisingly fun way to spend an afternoon. Would I do it again? Maybe. It’s definitely a good way to kill some time and exercise the old brain cells. Though next time, I might try a slightly easier one!
