Okay, so the other day I was down a rabbit hole, just clicking around, and I stumbled upon this question: what’s the longest field goal in college football history?
I mean, I watch a decent amount of college ball, but I’m no expert. I figured it had to be some crazy long kick, probably in perfect conditions. So, I started digging.
First, I just did a basic search. You know, typed in “longest field goal in college football” and boom – tons of stuff popped up. I started skimming through articles and forum posts. It was a mess of information, honestly. Some people were saying one thing, others were saying another. Lots of names and dates being thrown around.
I decided I needed a more organized approach. So I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, and I started making a list of the longest kicks I could find, along with the player’s name, the college, and the year it happened. Old school, I know, but it helped!
- Overton Curtis (1965)
- Steve Little(1977)
- Joe Williams(1978)
- Russell Wheatley(1982)
Then, I went back and double-checked each one. I looked for videos if I could find them, just to see the kick for myself. It’s one thing to read about it, but another to actually see it happen.
I was looking for things like:

- Did the ball go straight through, or did it barely make it?
- Was the weather clear, or was there wind or rain?
- What was the situation in the game? Was it a last-second kick?
After a while, I narrowed it down to a few of the very longest ones, all of which were, wow, incredibly impressive. It wasn’t an easy to judge the difficulty without more details!
It’s amazing what these kickers can do! It is hard to select just one out of them.
