Okay, so I’ve been trying to get better at the NYT crossword. It’s, like, a thing now, you know? Everyone’s doing it. And I’m competitive, so I needed to figure out how to not totally suck.

I started by just diving in, which was… a mistake. I’d stare at the grid, get maybe two or three answers, and then just get completely lost. Total frustration.
Then, I did some digging, and found some basic tips.
- Start with the Fill-in-the-Blanks: These are usually the easiest to get, and can give you some starter letters.
- Look for Short Words: The three and four-letter words are your friends! They show up all the time, and they’re easier to figure out.
- Pay Attention to Tense: If the clue is in past tense, the answer is probably in past tense too. Duh, but it helps!
So, I started applying these. I opened a new puzzle, and instead of jumping around, I went straight for the fill-in-the-blanks. I got a few of those pretty quickly, which was a nice confidence boost.
Then, I scanned for those short words. I found a couple – a three-letter word here, a four-letter word there. I filled them in, even if I wasn’t 100% sure. Sometimes, just having a few letters in place makes other answers pop out.
I also started paying more attention to the clue’s tense. If it was “Ran quickly,” I knew the answer would be something like “SPED,” not “SPEED.” This simple trick actually helped a lot!

The “Aha!” Moment
The real breakthrough came when I realized I could use the crossing letters. I had one answer filled in, and I needed another that crossed it. By looking at the letters I already had, I could narrow down the possibilities for the new word. It was like a little puzzle within the puzzle!
I’m still not, like, a crossword master or anything. But I’m definitely improving. I can actually finish some of the easier puzzles now, which is a huge win. It’s all about practice and using those little strategies.
Slowly but surely become better!
