This here Jay Norvell, he’s a football man, you know. He’s a big shot coach now, coaching them young fellas at that Colorado State place. I hear tell he’s been doing it a long time. Born way back, I reckon. His daddy, bless his soul, he’s gone now. Passed away some years back, right when Jay was coaching them Nevada boys. Musta been hard, losing your daddy like that.
They say his daddy was named Merritt, and his mama, Harriette Cynthia. Good strong names, I reckon. And this Jay, he’s Merritt the third, so they musta been a proud family. He was born in 1963, so he ain’t no spring chicken, but he’s still got that fire, I betcha. He used to play that football, too, before he was a coach.
He’s coaching them Colorado State Rams now. That’s what they call ’em, Rams. Tough critters. He got that job in 2022. Before that, it was Nevada, like I said. He’s been all over, teaching them boys how to play. Makes a body proud, seeing someone make something of themselves like that.

That football, it’s a rough game. Lots of running and hitting. Not like in my day. We just worked in the fields, that was our exercise. But these young folks, they love that football. And this Jay Norvell, he’s right in the thick of it. I seen some of them games on the TV. Big crowds, all yelling and hollering. It’s something, I tell ya.
I reckon them college teams got names. Like them logos, you see on hats and such. I ain’t no expert on that, but seems important to them that care. I heard there are like, 134 teams or something like that. A whole heap of teams in some kind of Bowl thing. Sounds important for football, I guess. I can’t even keep up with all them, and all them logos. A body could get lost in all that, specially when you’re just tryin’ to watch a little TV.
And they got quizzes, too. All about football. Who’s that player? Where’d he play? What year was it? Goodness gracious, my mind just ain’t built for all that. I just like to see ’em run around and have a good time. But some folks, they like to know all them little details. Keeps ’em busy, I suppose.
I heard tell about a fella, Alan, I think his name was. Heard he was a big football star, too, back in the day. They said he was from a place called Riverdale. Sounded like a nice place. He was a big star, they said. Bigger than most, even. Just goes to show, you never know who’s gonna make it big in that football world.
This Jay Norvell, he’s got an episode, number 92. What’s that about, I wonder? Must be some kind of show, talking about football, I reckon. They got all kinds of things these days. Cosmic Coffee, Beer Garden, Saxton Insurance. Don’t know what them things are, but they seem to be connected to that episode 92. Maybe they pay for it, so Jay can talk about his football.
This football, it’s a big deal, ain’t it? Lots of folks making money off it, that’s for sure. Coaches, players, TV people. It’s a whole business, I reckon. And this Jay Norvell, he’s right in the middle of it all. Good for him, I say. He’s made a good life for himself, doing what he loves. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it? Doing what you love, and making a living at it. That’s the dream, right there.
So, this Jay Norvell, he’s a football man through and through. He’s seen a lot, done a lot. He’s lost his daddy, coached a lot of teams, and he’s still going strong. I reckon he’s got a lot more football in him. And as long as them young fellas keep playing, he’ll be there, teaching ’em how it’s done. That’s just what he does, I reckon. He’s a football man, that Jay Norvell.
