Okay, so, “it’s just okay nyt”… This whole thing started last week when I saw some folks on Twitter going on about this NYT Cooking recipe. Said it was revolutionary, life-changing, the best thing since sliced bread, you know, the usual internet hype. Being the curious (and hungry) person I am, I figured, why not give it a shot?

First, I hunted down the recipe. Took me a minute ’cause everyone was just saying “the NYT recipe” without actually linking to it, classic. Finally found it tucked away in some article. Read through it, seemed simple enough. Ingredients were mostly stuff I already had kicking around – flour, butter, eggs, sugar, the usual suspects.
Next up was the actual cooking. Now, I’m no Julia Child, but I can usually follow a recipe without setting the house on fire. I mixed all the dry ingredients together, then creamed the butter and sugar like the recipe told me to. Added the eggs one by one, just like a good little chef. Everything seemed to be going smoothly.
Then came the “secret” ingredient. I won’t say exactly what it was (don’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone who actually wants to try this themselves), but it’s something you wouldn’t normally expect to see in this kind of dish. I stirred it in, gave it a good mix, and popped the whole thing in the oven. Waited, impatiently, for what felt like forever.
Finally, the timer dinged. I pulled it out, and… it looked… fine. Golden brown, slightly puffy, smelled pretty good. Let it cool down for a bit, then cut myself a slice. Took a bite…
And yeah, it was okay. Not bad, not great. Just… okay. It was edible, I guess. But definitely not life-changing. Not even particularly memorable. I mean, it tasted like the thing, but with that secret ingredient. The texture was…meh.

Honestly, I’ve made better stuff using recipes from my grandma’s old cookbook.
Maybe I messed something up? Maybe my oven is wonky? Maybe my taste buds are just broken? Who knows. But all that hype for something that’s “just okay” feels a little much, you know?
So, my takeaway? Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. And maybe stick to the tried-and-true recipes that you know work. 🤷♀️
Here’s a quick rundown of the experience:
- Saw hype online
- Found the recipe (finally!)
- Gathered ingredients
- Followed instructions (mostly)
- Baked the thing
- Tasted it
- Decided it was “just okay”
- Wrote this post
Would I make it again? Probably not. Was it a complete waste of time? Eh, maybe not. At least I can say I tried it. But honestly, I think I’ll stick to my usual baking routine from now on. Less hype, more deliciousness.
