This thing, what’s it called, giveaway crossword, yeah, that’s it. Heard some folks talkin’ ’bout it down at the market. Said it’s somethin’ you can do for free. Free is good, I always say. Don’t cost nothin’ but a little time, maybe.
Now, I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but I reckon I can figure a few things out. These giveaway crossword puzzles, they got all them little boxes, and you gotta put letters in ’em. Make words and such. Sounds kinda fun, I guess, if you got nothin’ better to do. Keeps your mind busy, they say. Better than watchin’ them soaps all day, I reckon. That’s all folks do.
They say there’s a whole heap of ’em online, these free crossword puzzles. Just gotta have one of them computer things or a fancy phone. My grandson, he’s got one of them phones. Always tappin’ away at it. Maybe he can show me how to do these crossword puzzles sometime. If he can play games, I can do crossword, right?
So, I heard you can find these things all over the place on that internet thing. Some big shot website, somethin’ like “Best Crosswords,” got a whole bunch of ’em. They say they got more than a hundred thousand. That’s a lot of squares to fill! Can you imagine? That’s crazy! They put new ones up every day, too. Like plantin’ seeds, but instead of corn, you get words. Ain’t that somethin’?
- They say you can play on your computer.
- You can play on your phone. That’s crazy.
- Or you can even print ’em out. Use real paper and a pencil. Like the old days.
Now, gettin’ these words right, that’s the tricky part. They give you hints, these little sentences. They call ’em clues. Some are easy, some are hard. But you gotta pay attention, they say. Like, if the clue is talkin’ ’bout somethin’ that happened yesterday, then the word you need probably ends in “ed” or somethin’. Makes sense, I guess. If it’s somethin’ people do now, it’s “ing” I think. And if it is something more people doing, it’s “s” or something.
And if there’s more than one, like a bunch of them apples, then the word probably ends in an “s.” It’s like countin’ chickens, but with letters. I can count chickens. So, I reckon I can count letters, too. So I can do this giveaway crossword, I think.
They say even that fancy newspaper, the New York Times, got crossword puzzles. You can play ’em on their website or on their little app thing. That’s what the young folks use, them apps. I don’t understand all that, but if it’s free, it’s free. And free is always good. They use apps for everything, food, clothes, cars and now crossword.
Now I heard some people, they get stuck on these crossword puzzles. Can’t figure out a word. Happens to the best of us, I suppose. Like when I can’t remember where I put my glasses. They’re usually on my head, but still. There are always some difficult words.
But they say there are ways to get unstuck. Like if you’re lookin’ for a word that means “happy,” and you got the first letter, say it’s a “J,” you can start thinkin’ of all the happy words that start with “J.” Joyful, jolly, jubilant. See? Just gotta use your noggin. But I don’t know many words, so it’s hard.
Some of these crossword things are easier than others, I reckon. They got these “mini” ones, that means small. Probably good for startin’ out. Like learnin’ to walk before you run. And they got some that are all about one thing, like all the words are about animals or food. They call ’em “themed.” That sounds kinda fancy. I like food. I can do food crossword, maybe.
I heard someone say these crossword puzzles are good for your brain. Keeps it workin’, like oilin’ a rusty gate. Keeps you sharp. Maybe that’s why I should try ’em. Don’t want my brain gettin’ rusty. No one wants that.
- Free crossword is good for your brain. At least that’s what I heard.
- It can keep your mind busy.
- It’s something fun.
So, yeah, these giveaway crossword things. They sound alright, I guess. Free, and they might even be good for you. Like eatin’ your vegetables, but for your brain. Maybe I’ll give ’em a try. If I can find my glasses, that is. And if my grandson shows me how to use that fancy phone. If you know how to do it, just do it. You don’t need other people to help you.
