So, I’ve been messing around with my putting lately, and one thing I really wanted to try was a flat putter grip. My old grip was, well, old, and I figured it was time for a change. I’d heard some good things about these flat grips, so I thought, “Why not?”

First, I yanked off my old grip. That was surprisingly satisfying. It was one of those standard, rounded ones, and it came off pretty easily with a little bit of solvent and some elbow grease.
Then, I measured the shaft of my putter. You know, just to make sure I got the right size grip. I didn’t want to end up with something too big or too small. Gotta get that Goldilocks fit, right?
Next up, I applied some double-sided grip tape to the shaft. I made sure to wrap it around evenly, no bumps or wrinkles. This is super important because you want the grip to feel smooth and consistent in your hands.
After the tape was on, I sprayed some solvent inside the new flat grip and onto the tape. This stuff is slippery, so you gotta be quick. I slid the new grip onto the shaft, making sure to align it properly. It was a bit of a struggle, but I got it on there.
Feeling it Out
Once the grip was on, I let it dry for a few hours. I didn’t want to mess with it while it was still wet. Patience is key, my friends.

When the time came for the real testing, I grabbed my putter and headed to the practice green, ready to see what this new grip could do.
Then, I placed my hands on the flat grip, instantly noticing the difference. The flat front provided a clear reference point, helping me align my hands consistently.
- It felt weird at first, ngl. Totally different from my old grip.
- But after a few putts, I started to get the hang of it.
- I noticed that my hands felt more stable, and I wasn’t twisting the putter face as much.
- It definitely helped me get a better feel for the putter head.
My putting stroke is a bit more of pendulum motion, now. Before with the old grip I was more “handsy”.
I’m still getting used to it, but I think this flat putter grip might actually be a game-changer for me. I’m gonna keep practicing with it and see how it goes. So far, so good!
