Alright, let’s talk about them Cincinnati Reds, ya know, the baseball team? Folks been jabberin’ about ’em, sayin’ this and that. Some say they gonna be good, some say they gonna be bad. Me? I just listen and watch, like I always do with them weather forecasts, sometimes they right, sometimes they ain’t worth a plugged nickel.
Now, I hear tell some folks who gamble, they puttin’ odds on the Reds winnin’ the whole shebang, the World Series they call it. Heard some say the odds ain’t too good, others say they a little better. Don’t matter much to me, I ain’t bettin’ no money, hard enough just payin’ for groceries these days.
One thing I did hear, that fella, Jake Fraley, he hits the ball pretty good. They say he had the best battin’ average last year. Average, that just means he hits the ball more than he misses, right? Well, that’s good, you gotta hit the ball to score, that’s just common sense, like knowin’ rain makes the ground wet.
Then there’s this tall drink of water, Elly De La Cruz. They say he strikes out a lot, but he’s young, still learnin’ I reckon. And he’s fast, real fast, like a jackrabbit. Folks are talkin’ about how many bases he gonna steal this year. Stealin’ bases, that sounds kinda sneaky, but I guess it’s alright in baseball. He’s tall though, like my grandson Billy, always growin’ out of his shoes.
There’s been talk about who’s gonna be the Reds’ manager too. Heard a name, Terry Francona. Don’t know him from Adam, but I guess if they hired him, he must know a thing or two about baseball. Managin’ a team, that’s gotta be like herdin’ cats, all them fellas runnin’ around, gotta keep ’em in line.
Some folks are sayin’ the Reds are gonna be strong this year, real strong. Others ain’t so sure. They say some other teams, like them Cubs and Cardinals, they got better too. It’s like that garden competition at the county fair, everyone’s tryin’ to grow the biggest tomatoes, but you never know who’s gonna win ’til the judgin’s done.
Last year, they say the Reds weren’t so good, lost a whole bunch of games. But baseball’s like life, sometimes you up, sometimes you down. You just gotta keep swingin’, that’s what my old pappy used to say. And that’s what I tell Billy when he gets discouraged with his schoolwork.
This year though, they say things are lookin’ up. People are excited, talkin’ about winnin’ the division and all that. That’d be nice, wouldn’t it? Give folks somethin’ to cheer about. We all need a little somethin’ to cheer about these days.
- So, what do I think? Well, I ain’t no expert, just an old woman who likes to watch the games when I can. But I think them Reds, they got a chance. They got some good players, and they seem to be workin’ hard.
- Will they win the World Series? Who knows? That’s a long shot, like hittin’ a fly with a slingshot from across the yard. But it’s fun to dream, ain’t it?
- Will they be better than last year? I reckon so. They got that young fella, De La Cruz, and that Fraley fella hittin’ the ball. And maybe that new manager, if they get him, will help too.
So there ya have it, my two cents on them Cincinnati Reds predictions. Don’t take it to the bank, like I said, I just watch and listen. But I’m rootin’ for ’em, just like I root for the tomatoes in my garden to grow big and red. It’s always more fun when things go good, right?
