Well now, let me tell you about this here crossword puzzle thing. Folks call it “iii’s nickname crossword,” or somethin’ like that. Sounds fancy, but it ain’t nothin’ more than fillin’ in the blanks, you see? Like plantin’ seeds, but with words instead of corn.
I heard tell that city folk, they love these puzzles. Millions of ’em, doin’ ’em every day in somethin’ called the “Daily Mail.” They even buy books full of ’em! Can you believe that? Spendin’ good money on puzzles when you could be buyin’ a nice piece of pie.
Now, these puzzles, they ain’t all the same. Some are easy peasy, like pickin’ ripe berries. Others, they’re harder than diggin’ a well in rocky ground. The easy ones, they might tell you if the answer is two words, like “apple pie” or somethin’. But the hard ones, they make you guess. It’s like tryin’ to figure out what the weather’s gonna be – sometimes you just gotta wait and see.
- The New York Times one: Folks say it’s the best, the real deal. Like a prize-winning pumpkin at the county fair. But I reckon it’s harder than milkin’ a cow in a thunderstorm.
- Free online ones: Now, these are more my speed. Quick and easy, like makin’ a cup of instant coffee. You can find ’em all over the place, on that there “internet” thing my grandbaby talks about.
- Easy ones by Stan Newman: I heard he makes real good easy puzzles, good for folks just learnin’ or maybe those city slickers who ain’t used to hard work. He even puts a title on ’em to give you a hint, like tellin’ you what kind of seeds you’re plantin’.
So, this “iii’s nickname” thing… it’s just a clue, you see? Like a trail of breadcrumbs leadin’ you to the answer. Could be anythin’, really. Maybe it’s short for somethin’, like how we call “Robert” just “Bob.” Or maybe it’s a special name, like how we call that ornery rooster “Red” even though his feathers are mostly brown.
I seen some puzzles that are just for beginners, or for folks learnin’ English. They give you more clues, like holdin’ your hand while you cross a muddy field. That’s mighty nice of ’em, I reckon.
And if you get stuck? Well, don’t you fret none. Most of these puzzles, they got answers you can look at the next day. Like cheatin’ on a test, but nobody’s gonna scold you for it. It’s just for fun, after all, like a game of checkers on a rainy afternoon. So, if you’re lookin’ for a way to pass the time, why not try one of these here crosswords? Just remember, start with the easy ones, like plantin’ potatoes before you tackle the cornfield.
And don’t get too worked up if you can’t figure it out right away. It ain’t the end of the world. Just take a break, have a cup of tea, and come back to it later. Sometimes, the answer just pops into your head when you least expect it, like a robin showin’ up on your windowsill. That’s the best feelin’ there is.
So go on, give it a try. You might just surprise yourself. And who knows, maybe you’ll even become one of them crossword puzzle fanatics. Just don’t forget to come back and tell me all about it.
