Okay, so I’ve been trying to up my tennis game lately, and one thing I really wanted to nail was a faster serve. It’s not like I’m aiming for Wimbledon or anything, but having a decent serve just makes the game more fun, you know?

First Steps and Frustrations
I started by just… trying to hit the ball harder. Genius, right? Yeah, didn’t work so well. Balls were flying everywhere – into the net, out of bounds, sometimes even backwards (don’t ask). My arm felt like it was going to fall off, and I was getting nowhere. Clearly, brute force wasn’t the answer.
Looking for Guidance
So, I did what anyone would do – I watched a ton of videos. I spent hours studying the pros, slow-motion replays, all that stuff. It looked so effortless for them! I tried to copy their stances, their swings, their everything. It felt awkward and, honestly, a bit ridiculous.
Breaking It Down
After some more trial and error (mostly error), I realized I needed to break it down into smaller steps. I focused on these things
- The Grip:I switched the way to hold my racket.
- The Stance:I made my feet shoulder-width apart, non-dominant foot forward.
- The Toss:I tried to make the toss consistent, not too high, not too low.
- The Swing:I thought about it like a throwing motion, not just a hitting motion.
- The Contact Point:I Tried to hit the ball at the highest point I could reach.
Little Improvements, Big Difference
I started practicing each of these things separately. Toss after toss, swing after swing. It was boring, but I could feel myself getting a little better. I wasn’t thinking about speed at all, just about getting the technique right.
Putting It All Together
Then came the scary part – putting it all together. My first few serves were still pretty shaky, but something felt different. I was generating more power without feeling like I was straining. The ball was going in more often, too!

Still a Work in Progress
I’m definitely not serving like a pro yet, but my serves are noticeably faster and more consistent. My shoulder doesn’t ache as much after playing, which is a huge bonus. It’s still a work in progress, and I’m sure I’ll keep tweaking things. But for now, I’m pretty happy with the progress I’ve made. It just goes to show, sometimes you gotta slow down to speed up, even on the tennis court!
