Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with this “Derek Shelton” thing. I had no clue who this guy was at first, honestly. I just typed the name into Google, and it turns out he’s the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. Alright, cool, I like baseball, so I figured, why not dig a little deeper?
First, I opened up a new browser and searched “Derek Shelton early life”. I found out he was born in Carbondale, Illinois. He played some college ball, and then had a short stint in the minor leagues. It wasn’t anything too crazy, the usual story for a lot of these baseball guys who end up coaching.
Then, I switched gears and started looking into his coaching career. It seemed like he bounced around a bit, you know, like most coaches do. I listed them out one by one, in order:
- New York Yankees minor league system (2002) – Started as a manager in the minors.
- Cleveland Indians (2005-2009) – Became a hitting coach in the big leagues.
- Tampa Bay Rays (2010-2016) – Another hitting coach gig, this time in Tampa.
- Toronto Blue Jays (2017) – Spent a year in Toronto as a “quality control coach.” No clue what that means, but it sounds fancy.
- Minnesota Twins (2018-2019) – Moved to Minnesota as a bench coach, which is basically the assistant manager.
Finally, in 2020, he landed the manager job with the Pittsburgh Pirates. That’s where he is now. So, I spent a good chunk of the afternoon reading articles and watching some interviews with him. I wanted to get a feel for his managing style and all that.
What I Learned About Derek Shelton
From what I gathered, he’s a pretty well-respected guy in the baseball world. He’s known for being a good communicator and for building strong relationships with his players. He’s also a bit of a “numbers guy,” which is pretty common in baseball these days. He seems to really believe in using data and analytics to make decisions. He’s got a tough job ahead of him, trying to turn the Pirates into a winner, but it seems like he’s up for the challenge.
I’m not a expert on baseball management or anything, but from what I found out, the guy seems alright.
This was just me poking around and learning something new today. Hope you enjoyed the ride!
