So, I was watching some MMA the other day, and Rose Namajunas, that “Thug Rose” fighter, was on. Her last name, Namajunas, it kinda stuck with me. It’s not something you hear every day, right? I got to thinking, “Where in the world does that name come from?” So, I decided to do a little digging.
First, I just typed “Namajunas last name origin” into the search bar. You know, the usual. A bunch of stuff popped up, but nothing really solid at first. A lot of it was just general info about her, like where she was born and who her parents were. I learned that she was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 29, 1992, to Lithuanian parents, Jolita Frank and Arturas, who came to the U.S. in 1991. Her full name is Rose Gertrude Namajunas. She is called “Thug Rose” in the Octagon. She once competed on The Ultimate Fighter, and even became a two-time strawweight champion.
Then, I stumbled upon a couple of sites, like Forebears, that specialize in surname origins. I clicked around on one of them and it listed “Namajunas” as a Lithuanian name. It said the name is 9 characters long. That’s interesting! It also mentioned that it is a family name or surname in many languages. It told me how popular the name is and its history. I found the meaning, history and origin of surnames, also called last names or family names.
Finding the Roots
- I tried searching by the origin of the name on different websites.
- I also noticed that some other sites, like Ancestry, let you trace your family history. I didn’t go that deep, but it’s cool that you can do that.
I found out that her great-grandmother was named Rožė Gotšalkaitė Namajūnienė. Her great-grandfather, Juozas, was an Independent Lithuania military officer. Rose Namajunas is of Lithuanian ethnicity and has American citizenship.
So, basically, what I figured out is that Namajunas is a Lithuanian last name. It’s not super common, but it definitely has some history to it. It was a fun little research project, and now I know a bit more about “Thug Rose” and her roots!
