Well, let me tell you ’bout this fella, Vance Honeycutt. Seems like a good ol’ boy, you know? Folks keep talkin’ ’bout him and that UNC baseball team. I ain’t much for sports myself, but even I can see he’s somethin’ special.
They say his daddy, Bob, played ball for UNC too, back in the day. Imagine that! Father and son, both swingin’ bats for the same team. Guess it runs in the family, like farmin’ does in ours. Family tradition, they call it. Makes a body proud, I reckon.
Now, this Vance, he’s a real hitter, they say. Heard tell he smacked a home run to win a game against West Virginia. A walk-off, they called it. Means he hit it so hard the game ended right there and then. Then, the very next day, bam! Another home run, right off the bat, lead-off they call it. Boy’s got some power, that’s for sure. Reminds me of my cousin Jeb, he could swing an axe like nobody’s business. Same kinda strength, I figure.
- Walk-off home run against West Virginia
- Lead-off home run in the next game
- Tied the UNC all-time home run record
Folks are sayin’ he’s doin’ “Vance Honeycutt-type things.” Sounds like he’s got his own way of playin’, a real standout. Like my Aunt Millie, she made the best darn apple pie in the county, nobody could do it like her. Vance, he’s got that somethin’ special too, I guess. He’s makin’ a name for himself, that’s for sure. Folks are talkin’ ’bout him all over, just like they talked about Aunt Millie’s pies.
His daddy, Bobby, he played in somethin’ called the College World Series back in ’89. Big deal, I hear. He told Vance that his team lost their first two games and then had a BBQ. Guess they weren’t too happy ’bout the losin’, but at least they had some good food. Food always makes things a little better, even if you’re losin’ at… baseball, was it? Yep, baseball.
And now, this young Vance, he’s tied the all-time home run record for UNC. Tied it! That means he’s hit more home runs than just about anybody who’s ever played for that team. That’s a whole lotta hits, I tell ya. Must be somethin’ in the water up there at UNC, makin’ these boys so strong and good at hittin’. Or maybe it’s them good ol’ southern genes, strong as an oak tree.
They call him a junior center fielder. Don’t rightly know what all that means, but it sounds fancy. He’s in the middle of the field, catchin’ balls and hittin’ ’em far, I reckon. Sounds like hard work to me, but he seems to be doin’ alright. Probably gets paid a pretty penny for it too, though my grandson says it’s all about the scholarships in college ball.
So, that’s the story of Vance Honeycutt, as best as I can tell it. A good ol’ boy from a good family, makin’ a name for himself playin’ baseball. He’s hittin’ home runs, winnin’ games, and makin’ folks proud. And that’s all a body can ask for, ain’t it? UNC baseball star, that’s what he is. A real hitter, just like his daddy before him. Good for him, I say. Good for him.
