Alright, let’s talk about this Buddy Bennett fella. I ain’t no fancy writer, so I’m just gonna tell it to ya straight, like I’d tell my neighbor over the fence.
Who’s this Buddy Bennett anyway? Well, from what I gather, there’s been a few of ’em. Sounds like a name that gets passed around, ya know? Like my grandpappy was John, and then my brother named his boy John too. It’s just how it goes.
- One Buddy Bennett, seems he was a football coach. A “defensive backs coach,” they say. Now, I don’t know much about football, all that runnin’ around and hittin’ each other ain’t for me. But bein’ a coach, that sounds important. Means he told them boys how to play, how to win. This fella, he coached way back when, in 1970. And they say he coached some fella named Tim Priest, who was a big deal, a “Vol Legend” they call him. Musta been a good coach, this Buddy.
- Then there’s another Buddy Bennett, Richard G. “Buddy” Bennett, Sr. from Screven, Georgia. Bless his heart, he passed away in July. They said he “entered his eternal rest.” Sounds peaceful, I reckon. He was 78, lived a good long life, I hope.
See, it gets confusing, all these Buddy Bennetts. It’s like tryin’ to keep track of all the stray cats in the neighborhood. They all look kinda similar, and you can’t tell ’em apart ‘less you know ’em real well.
And then there’s talk of some Stetson Bennett. Now, he’s got a Buddy Bennett in his family too, his grandpa! Seems like football runs in that family, like how we all got big feet in my family. Stetson’s daddy and his momma, they met at the University of Georgia. Fancy that! Guess that’s where all that football stuff started. This Stetson, he plays football too, I think. Heard his name on the TV once or twice when my grandson was watchin’ the game. Loud game, that football.
And what about Will Bennett? Now, he’s a different story altogether. See, there’s this fella named Edwin Hodge, and he played a character named Will Bennett. This ain’t real life, though. This is like them stories they show on the TV, the ones with all the drama and such. I don’t watch much TV myself, too busy with the chickens and the garden, but my daughter, she loves them stories.
So, you got your real-life Buddy Bennetts, the coach and the fella from Georgia, and then you got your pretend Will Bennett. It’s a whole heap of Bennetts, enough to make your head spin! Makes you wonder if they’re all related somehow, like distant cousins or somethin’. Maybe they got together at family reunions, talkin’ about football and whatnot.
This whole thing reminds me of that time my cousin swore he saw Elvis at the Piggly Wiggly. Turned out it was just some fella with big hair and a shiny suit. Point is, sometimes things ain’t always what they seem. You hear a name like Buddy Bennett, and you think you know who they’re talkin’ about, but there could be a whole bunch of ’em, each with their own story.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about these Buddy Bennetts. Just a bunch of fellas with the same name, livin’ their lives, playin’ football, or maybe just restin’ in peace. It’s a big world out there, with lots of people, and lots of names. And sometimes, those names just happen to be the same.
So next time you hear the name Buddy Bennett, just remember, there might be more to the story than you think. Maybe he’s a coach, maybe he’s from Georgia, or maybe he’s just a fella on the TV. Or maybe, just maybe, he’s someone else entirely. Who knows? Life’s full of surprises, that’s for sure.
And that’s the truth, as plain as the nose on your face.
