Alright, let’s talk about this “excuses crossword” thing. You know, like them puzzles in the newspaper? I ain’t no scholar, but I reckon I can figure things out.
So, “excuses.” That’s like when you don’t wanna do somethin’, right? Like, “Oh, I can’t go to town today, my cow’s got the hiccups.” That’s an excuse! See, even us old folks know a thing or two about makin’ excuses. Kids these days, they’re always makin’ excuses for not doin’ their chores. “My phone’s dead,” they say. Back in my day, we didn’t have no phones, just good ol’ hard work!
Now, a crossword… that’s one of them things with the squares and the little clues. You gotta fill in the words, right? Up and down, side to side. Sometimes they’re easy, sometimes they make you scratch your head ’til your hair falls out. I remember my grandson tryin’ to explain one to me once. Talkin’ ’bout “tractor beams” and “spaceships.” Sounded like a whole lotta hogwash to me! But he said it was somethin’ in the puzzle. Imagine that, spaceships in a puzzle!
So, an “excuses crossword”… I guess that means the clues are all about reasons why you can’t do stuff? Like, the clue might be “Reason for being late” and the answer is “TRAFFIC” or somethin’ like that. Or maybe “Why the cake is burnt”? And the answer’s gotta be “OVEN”. See? I’m gettin’ the hang of this!
I heard tell there’s these crosswords online now. You don’t even need a pencil! Just tap, tap, tap on your little phone screen. My niece showed me once. Said it was a “daily challenge.” Hmph! Tryin’ to get up before the rooster crows and feedin’ a whole farm full of animals, that’s a daily challenge! But I guess these puzzles keep folks busy. Keeps their minds sharp, like they say.
- Maybe a clue could be “Why the dishes ain’t done”? And the answer is “TIRED”. ‘Cause after a long day, who wants to wash dishes?
- Or how about “Excuse for not visitin’ “? And the answer is “SICK”. Nobody wants to spread their germs around.
- And then there’s “Reason the garden ain’t weeded.” That one’s easy: “RAIN”. Can’t pull weeds in the mud, can ya?
Sometimes, the excuses are real, and sometimes, well, they’re just excuses. Like that time my neighbor said he couldn’t help me fix the fence ’cause he had a “minaudière” appointment. Turns out, that’s just a fancy word for a little purse! He was goin’ to a party, not a doctor’s appointment like he made it sound. People and their fancy words!
I saw my grandson playin’ one of them word games on his phone the other day. It had somethin’ to do with a “meeple”. Said it was a little person-shaped thing in a board game. These young folks and their games! Back in my day, we played tag and hide-and-seek. But I guess it’s all the same, just different ways of passin’ the time. And maybe learnin’ a few new words along the way, even if they’re silly like “meeple”. He also said somethin’ ’bout “Nissan” bein’ a “leaf maker”. Didn’t make no sense to me, cars ain’t got nothin’ to do with leaves. But he said it was just a trick in the puzzle.
So, this “excuses crossword”… it’s about findin’ those reasons, those explanations, those little white lies we tell sometimes. Whether it’s online or in the newspaper, it’s a way to keep your brain workin’. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll help us think twice before we make an excuse next time. Or at least come up with a better one! ‘Cause if you ain’t got a good excuse, you might as well just do the work. That’s what I always say. And if someone asks you for a solution for “boredom” tell ‘em to come help me with the chores. Plenty of work to go around, no time for boredom on a farm.
