Alright, let’s talk about my little adventure with Alexa Bliss in 2022. No, not that Alexa Bliss, the WWE superstar – this is about Amazon’s Alexa, and how I tried to make it a bit more… Bliss-ful, if you catch my drift. 😉

It all started when I finally decided to ditch the old alarm clock. I was tired of the jarring sounds and wanted something a little gentler to wake me up. So, I bought an Echo Dot. Seemed simple enough, right?
First steps: Unboxing and Setup
- Took the Echo Dot outta the box. Man, that thing is small.
- Plugged it in, downloaded the Alexa app on my phone.
- Went through the setup, connected it to my Wi-Fi. Piece of cake.
Trying the Basics – Alarms & Music
The first thing I did was set up an alarm. “Alexa, set an alarm for 7 AM.” Boom. Done. The next morning, it worked like a charm. Woke up to some chill music instead of that awful buzzing. Already an improvement!
Then I started messing around with music. “Alexa, play some 80s music.” And bam, Journey filled the room. Not bad. I gotta say, the sound quality wasn’t amazing, but it was good enough for background tunes.

Diving Deeper – Smart Home Integration
This is where things got a little more interesting. I had a couple of smart plugs lying around, so I figured, why not connect them to Alexa?
- Linking the Plugs: Opened the Alexa app, went to “Skills & Games,” and searched for the skill for my smart plug brand. Enabled it, logged in with my account. Easy peasy.
- Naming the Devices: Alexa found the plugs, and I named them “Lamp” and “Fan.”
- Testing it Out: “Alexa, turn on the lamp.” Click. The lamp came on! I felt like a tech wizard. 🧙♂️
Creating Routines – My “Good Morning” Routine
Okay, now I was getting hooked. I wanted to automate things even further. So, I decided to create a “Good Morning” routine.
- Open Alexa App: Went to “Routines” and hit the plus button to create a new one.
- Set Trigger: Chose “When I say Alexa…” and typed in “Good Morning.”
- Add Actions: Added the following actions:
- Turn on the lamp.
- Play my favorite news podcast.
- Tell me the weather.
- Save Routine: Saved the routine and gave it a test run.
Now, every morning, all I had to say was “Alexa, Good Morning,” and the lamp would turn on, the news would start playing, and I’d get a weather update. Super convenient!

The Hiccups and Quirks
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. Alexa had its moments.
- Misunderstandings: Sometimes it would mishear me or misunderstand what I was asking. I’d have to repeat myself or rephrase things.
- Skill Issues: Some of the skills I tried were buggy or just plain useless. I uninstalled a bunch of them.
- Wi-Fi Woes: If my Wi-Fi was acting up, Alexa would become unresponsive. Grrr.
Overall Impression
Even with the occasional hiccups, I gotta say, I was pretty impressed with Alexa. It made my mornings a little bit easier, and it was fun to play around with the smart home stuff. It’s not perfect, but it’s a cool little gadget that can actually be useful.
I’m still exploring all the things Alexa can do. Maybe next year, I’ll get around to setting up a full smart home system. Who knows? For now, I’m happy with my “Good Morning” routine and my ability to control my lamp with my voice. Small wins, right? 😄
