Okay, so today I tried my hand at something called a “laments crossword”. Sounds a bit gloomy, huh? But let me tell you, it was quite the brain workout!
First off, I grabbed the newspaper, the one from the LA Times dated December 8, 2024, because that’s where I found this particular crossword.
I started digging around online to see what this “laments” thing was all about. Turns out, it’s a pretty popular clue in these puzzles. I stumbled upon a crossword solver website that claimed to have a whopping 60 answers for “laments”! I thought, “Sixty? That’s a lot of ways to say someone’s bummed out!”
Then I narrowed it down. A lot of folks were saying the answer had 7 letters. And guess what? Another site suggested a solution: “BEMOANS.” That seemed to fit the bill.
My List of Possible Solutions
- BEMOANS (7 letters) – This was the one that kept popping up.
But it wasn’t just about finding that one answer. I also learned that “lament” itself could be a crossword clue, and people were searching for answers for that, too. The internet is full of these crossword enthusiasts! And the crossword clue for “lament” has 6 letters and 8 possible solutions.
Apparently, this “laments” clue has been used over 20 times in different crossword puzzles. I even found it in some old issues of a magazine called “That’s Life!” from 2017. Wild, right?
And just for kicks, I learned that an “elegy” is a type of poem, usually a sad one about someone who’s passed away. These crosswords are teaching me all sorts of things!
I also read somewhere that the New York Times crossword gets harder throughout the week. Monday’s the easiest, and by Saturday, you’re really scratching your head. Makes sense, I guess.
So yeah, that was my little adventure with the “laments crossword” today. I solved it, I learned some new words, and I got a glimpse into the world of crossword puzzles. Not too shabby for a regular morning!
