Okay, so, today I want to talk about this putter I’ve been messing around with – the Ghost Spider. Yeah, that’s the one from TaylorMade. I’d heard some chatter about it, people saying it’s super stable and all that. I was using an old blade putter before, nothing fancy, but I figured, why not give this Ghost Spider a shot?
First off, this thing looks wild. It’s not your grandpa’s putter, that’s for sure. It’s got this big, chunky head, and it’s mostly white, which is kinda cool, I guess. The first thing I did was take it to the practice green. I wanted to see if this “high MOI” thing was just marketing hype or if it actually made a difference.
I started with some short putts, just to get a feel for it. The weight is definitely different. It feels heavier than my old putter, but in a good way. It’s like, it swings itself almost. I noticed right away that even when I didn’t hit it perfectly, the ball still went pretty straight. That’s the MOI thing at work, I’m assuming. It’s supposed to make the putter more forgiving, and it seems like it does.
Counterbalanced Design
- Heavy Head: I learned that the head on this thing is like 380 grams. That’s hefty!
- Overall Weight: This makes the whole club feel more balanced. It is also a reason for its high MOI.
Then I moved on to longer putts. This is where I usually struggle. I tend to push or pull my putts, especially when I’m nervous. But with the Ghost Spider, I felt more confident. It just felt more stable throughout the stroke. I even sank a few long ones that I normally would have missed. I was hitting from all over the place, even off the toe a few times, just to see what would happen. The putter stayed surprisingly steady.
I also messed around with the PureRoll insert. That’s the stuff on the face of the putter. TaylorMade says it helps the ball roll smoother, and I think they’re right. The ball seemed to come off the face really nicely, with a good, consistent roll. It also feels pretty soft when you hit it, but not mushy or anything.
PureRoll Insert
- Soft Feel: It felt really nice hitting the ball.
- Smooth Roll: The ball rolled consistently off the face.
After spending a few hours with it, I gotta say, I’m impressed. It’s definitely different from any putter I’ve used before. But it seems to work. My putting felt more consistent, and I definitely felt more confident on the greens.
Now, I’m not saying this putter is going to magically turn you into a putting god. You still gotta practice and have a good stroke. But if you’re someone who struggles with consistency, or if you just want a putter that feels super stable, the Ghost Spider is worth checking out. It might just help you sink a few more putts. And who doesn’t want that?
