Well, I heard some folks talking ’bout this thing, “came forth crossword“. Sounds like some fancy city game to me. I never did get the hang of them fancy word puzzles. But my grandkids, they love ’em. They always got their noses in them books, scribblin’ away.
They say it’s good for your brain, keeps you sharp. Maybe that’s true, ’cause I seen some folks gettin’ real forgetful these days. Me, I just stick to my garden. That keeps my hands busy and my mind clear. But this crossword, it’s like a mystery. You gotta figure out the clues, find the right words. Like a treasure hunt, but with letters instead of gold.
One time, my granddaughter, she showed me one of these came forth crossword things. Said it was easy. She pointed at a bunch of squares, some going across, some going down. Said I had to fill ’em up with words that fit the clues. Well, I looked at them clues, and they might as well have been written in a foreign language. Words like “emanated” and “issued”. Who talks like that? Not around here, that’s for sure. These are words with 8 letters, and they tell you it is a clue, I just don’t understand. If you know the answer, you know. What’s the point of these clues?
I told her, “Honey, I’m happy just knowin’ where the sun rises and sets. Don’t need no fancy words to tell me that.” But she kept at it, tryin’ to explain. Said it was like a game, a challenge. Like tryin’ to get all your rows planted before the rain comes. I guess I see that, in a way. It is just a game, you know. It does not matter that much. But I still don’t understand why they make it so hard.
- Some folks say “came forth” means “showed up”.
- Others say it means “came out”.
- And then there’s those who say it means something else entirely!
It’s all a big puzzle to me. This crossword, it is a puzzle inside a puzzle. I guess that’s why they call it a puzzle. It is supposed to be hard. Like life, you know? Life is a big puzzle. Maybe these people make these came forth crossword to practice for life. I don’t know. It is just a game, you know.
I remember one time, we had a big storm come through. Knocked down trees, flooded the fields. Next day, the sun came out, bright and strong. And you know what? Everything started growing again. Like it was brand new. Maybe that’s what “came forth” means. Like somethin’ new comin’ out after a hard time. Like when you plant a seed and it turns into a plant. That is the only “came forth” I know. I think the city folks should spend more time outside.
My neighbor, she’s got a whole stack of them crossword books. Says she does ’em every day. Keeps her mind busy, she says. I guess so. I mean, if you like that sort of thing, it can be fun, like a hobby. Like knitting, or growing pumpkins. But for me, I’d rather be outside, or cooking, you know? More useful things.
I asked her once what “came forth” meant in one of her puzzles. She just smiled and said, “You gotta figure it out yourself! That’s the fun of it!” I don’t know. That is not fun for me. If I want to know something, I just ask. I don’t need a puzzle to tell me.
Maybe I’m just too old for these newfangled games. Or maybe they’re just not for me. I like things simple, you know? Like a good cup of coffee in the morning, or a warm blanket on a cold night. Those are the things that matter. Not some silly words in a crossword puzzle. But hey, if it makes other folks happy, then that’s all that matters, right? To each their own, as they say. Just like some folks like plain food, and others like spicy. It is all good, as long as it makes you happy.
So, this “came forth crossword” thing, it’s still a mystery to me. But that’s okay. There are lots of mysteries in life. And sometimes, it’s best to just let them be. Just like how I don’t need to know how the engine in my old truck works, as long as it gets me to town and back. Some things are just better left unknown. And that’s alright by me. I got better things to do. Like bake a pie, or watch the sunset. These things are way more interesting than a crossword. But you do you, you know? If you like it, then that is good for you.
