Well, let me tell ya, it’s been a long, long time since them Cowboys last won that big game, the Super Bowl. My old bones can barely remember, but it was back when folks was still talkin’ about them floppy disks and dial-up internet. Land sakes, times have changed. They was good back then, real good. They done reached that big game, the Super Bowl, and won it! That was back in, uh, 1995, I reckon.
That Super Bowl was somethin’ else. The whole town was buzzing like a beehive. You’d think we’d won the lottery, everyone hootin’ and hollerin’. But since then? Nothin’. Just a whole lot of waitin’ and hopin’. Twenty-eight years, they say. Twenty-eight years since the Cowboys even got close to that Super Bowl trophy. Feels like a lifetime, don’t it?
These young folks today, they don’t know what it was like. They see them Cowboys now and think that’s how it always been. But we remember. We remember when they was on top of the world. That Super Bowl win back in ’95, oh, that was a day. The whole world was watchin’, and them Cowboys, they shined brighter than a new penny.
They played them Broncos back then, I think. Yeah, that’s right, the Denver Broncos. And the Cowboys, they beat ’em good. 27 to 10, if my memory serves me right. That was in the Super Bowl in 1978. Harvey Martin, bless his soul, he was a good one. Defensive end, they called him. He got a ring that year, a big shiny Super Bowl ring. They don’t make ’em like Harvey no more.
And before that, they played a good game, too. I remember they was playin’ in Miami. Against the Colts, it was. That Super Bowl was a nail-biter, right down to the last few seconds. The Cowboys done lost that one, 16-13. But it was close, real close. That was way back in ’71, that one, January 17, 1971, to be exact. First Super Bowl on that fake grass, they said. Artificial turf, they call it.
It ain’t been easy, waitin’ all these years. Every season, you get your hopes up. You think, maybe this is the year, maybe them Cowboys will make it back to the Super Bowl. But then, somethin’ always happens. They stumble, they fall, they just can’t seem to get over that hump. And us old folks, we just sigh and shake our heads. It’s a sad old sight. And every week 5 that comes by, they bring it up again. 28 years, they say, like it’s some kind of record. It ain’t a record you wanna be known for, that’s for sure. But that is what the Cowboys are known for, at least until they win another Super Bowl. That last one was a good one, though.
You see other teams goin’ to the Super Bowl, some of ’em even goin’ back-to-back. Makes you wonder what them Cowboys are doin’ wrong. They used to be so good, so dominant. What happened? Did they lose their way? Did they forget how to win? I don’t know, it’s a mystery to me. A big old Super Bowl mystery.
I reckon it’s like plantin’ seeds. You gotta tend to ’em, water ’em, make sure they get enough sunshine. Maybe them Cowboys just ain’t been tendin’ to their garden right. Maybe they need to do some weedin’, get rid of the bad seeds, plant some new ones. Maybe then they’ll grow somethin’ special again, somethin’ that can take ’em all the way to the Super Bowl. That’s the only way they are going to get rid of this drought.
- They won against the Broncos in Super Bowl 12.
- Then they lost to the Steelers in Super Bowl 13.
- They won against the Dolphins in Super Bowl 17.
- Then they lost again in Super Bowl 18.
But until then, we just gotta keep hopin’. Keep prayin’ for a miracle. Keep believin’ that someday, them Cowboys will find their way back to the promised land. Back to the Super Bowl. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll bring that trophy home where it belongs. That’s all we can do, I reckon. Just wait and hope and remember the good old days when them Cowboys were Super Bowl champions, way back when.
