Okay, so today I wanna talk about my experience diving into the new Modern Horizons 3 set. Man, what a wild ride!

First off, I saw everyone hyping up the Eldrazi stuff. Emrakul, Ugin, Ulamog… the whole gang. I knew I had to get my hands on some of those big baddies. I started by hitting up my local game store on release day. It was a zoo! People were ripping packs like they were trying to find the One Ring or something. I snagged a couple of set boosters and a collector booster, hoping for the best.
My first couple of pulls were… okay. Nothing crazy. Some decent rares, a few cool commons and uncommons for my draft chaff pile. Then, BOOM! I cracked a Ulamog, the Defiler in the collector booster. I almost jumped out of my skin. This thing is a HOUSE. I immediately started thinking about how to jam it into a deck.
Next, I went online to scope out the prices and see what the general consensus was on the set. Turns out, those Eldrazi titans are the chase cards, just like everyone thought. They are expensive! I checked out some deck lists people were brewing, and noticed there were some neat synergies with the new energy mechanic. I’m not usually an energy guy, but seeing Ulamog wreck face made me reconsider everything.
I decided to build a janky Eldrazi ramp deck. I threw in some cards like [[Ancient Tomb]], [[City of Traitors]] (yeah, I know they are expensive, but I had them lying around), and any other fast mana I could find. Then I added some cheap creatures that generate energy. It was a total mess, but I was determined to make it work.
The first few games were rough. I either got mana screwed, or my opponent just ran me over before I could even cast a creature. But then, in one glorious game, everything came together. I had a turn one [[Ancient Tomb]], turn two [[Everflowing Chalice]] (set to two), turn three [[Matter Reshaper]], and then turn four, Ulamog, the Defiler. My opponent just stared at the board in disbelief. It was amazing!

Of course, that was the only game where everything went perfectly. Most of the time, my deck was just clunky and inconsistent. But it was still fun to try and make it work. I learned a lot about mana bases, ramp strategies, and the importance of having a plan B (and C, and D…).
Besides the Eldrazi, I was also impressed by some of the other cards in the set. There’s a ton of cool synergy pieces and potential role players that could slot into decks. The set definitely brought some new juice into the Modern format.
Here are a few other cards that caught my eye:
- [[Flare of Denial]]: Free countermagic? Sign me up! This card seems insane.
- [[Nulldrifter]]: A colourless beater with evoke? Yes, please!
- [[Harrenhall, the Arsenal]]: This land makes colorless decks so much more viable.
Overall, Modern Horizons 3 is a pretty sweet set. It’s got powerful cards, interesting mechanics, and it’s sure to shake up the Modern format. I would highly recommend grabbing some packs and seeing what you can find!
My final thought? I might just stick to playing more stable, proven decks. But hey, brewing janky decks is half the fun, right?
