Alright, let’s talk about the MMA hat I just finished. It was a fun little project, nothing too complicated, but I learned a few things along the way.

So, first thing’s first, I grabbed some materials. I had some old black cotton twill lying around – perfect for the body of the hat. Then, I found some breathable mesh for the back panels, ’cause let’s be honest, nobody wants a sweaty head while they’re watching fights. And of course, gotta have the thread – black to match the twill, and some contrasting white for the MMA logo I was planning to stitch on.
Next, I cut out the pattern pieces. I didn’t have a proper hat pattern, so I kinda Frankensteined one together from a couple of different online sources. Modified it a bit to fit my head size, you know? Measure twice, cut once, that’s the motto… even if I ignored it a few times.
Then came the fun part – sewing it all together. Started with the front panels, joined ’em up nice and neat. Then I attached the side panels, making sure everything lined up correctly. The mesh for the back was a bit trickier, needed to be careful not to stretch it out of shape. Seriously though, pinning is your friend. Use ALL the pins.
The brim was a whole different beast. I used some stiff interfacing to give it some shape and structure. Basted it together first, then carefully stitched it to the front of the hat. That curve is a pain, gotta go slow and steady.
Now, for the MMA logo. I printed out a stencil, traced it onto some white fabric, and then carefully cut it out. Pinned it to the front panel and started stitching around the edges. Went with a simple satin stitch, nothing too fancy. It took a while, but it came out pretty clean, I think. Gives it that extra touch.

Almost done! I added a sweatband on the inside, ’cause comfort is key. Just a simple strip of absorbent fabric, stitched around the inside edge. Then I tacked on some elastic at the back to give it a snug fit.
Finally, a little bit of topstitching to clean everything up and add some extra durability. And that was it! A brand new MMA hat, ready for fight night.
- Learned: Working with mesh is tricky, but worth it for the breathability.
- Struggled with: Getting the brim curve perfect.
- Happy with: How the logo turned out.
Overall, a fun and rewarding project. Definitely gonna wear this thing with pride! Maybe I’ll even make another one, try out a different design.
