Okay, so I’ve been wanting to customize my shoes for a while, and I finally decided to give it a shot. I’m calling it “Project Roger,” just because. I’m no artist, but I figured, how hard could it be, right?

Getting Started
First, I needed some shoes. I picked up a pair of plain white canvas sneakers. Cheap ones, because I fully expected to mess this up. Then came the fun part – gathering supplies!
- Fabric markers: I grabbed a bunch of different colors.
- Stencils: I thought these would help with my, uh, lack of artistic talent. I got some basic shapes and letters.
- Masking tape: For creating clean lines, hopefully.
- Pencil: To sketch out my ideas before going permanent.
- Eraser: For, you know, mistakes. Lots of mistakes.
The Messy Middle
I started by sketching some designs on paper. Nothing fancy, just some stripes and maybe a little “Roger” logo. I used the pencil to lightly draw on the shoes, then used the masking tape to section off areas I wanted to color.
The fabric markers were… interesting. They bled a little more than I expected, especially on the canvas. My straight lines weren’t so straight. The stencils helped a bit, but it still looked kind of amateurish, which I guess is what I am. I definitely used that eraser a lot.
I tried to layer some colors, which didn’t exactly work out. It got a little muddy in places. I quickly learned that less is more. Simple is good. At one point, I accidentally smudged a big black mark across the side of one shoe. Panic! But, after some frantic rubbing with a damp cloth, it faded enough to be incorporated into the “design.” Happy accident, I guess?
The (Sort Of) Finished Product
After a few hours of messing around, I had something that resembled customized shoes. They’re definitely not perfect. The lines are wobbly, the colors are a bit uneven, and that accidental smudge is still kind of visible if you look closely. But, hey, I made them! They’re uniquely mine, and that’s pretty cool. I might try a simpler design next time, though. Maybe just stick to polka dots. Or stripes. Definitely fewer colors.

Would I recommend this to others? Yeah, sure! Just don’t expect miracles. It’s fun, it’s messy, and you end up with something that’s one-of-a-kind, even if that “one-of-a-kind” look is a bit… rustic. “Project Roger” was a success, in its own messy way.
